One of the many reasons that computers are so amazing is the amount of choice consumer have. Within any set of operating systems is typically a set of variations. Apple is a bit of an exception, but Windows and Linux both have a substantial amount of “flavours” available.
I recently started using a netbook. Think old netbook…. It’s an Acer Aspire One. I bought it to do some typing up at coffee shops and so on without having to carry a bigger laptop. This laptop is not very powerful, it does the trick for surfing the web, but not much past that. This made the computer a perfect candidate for a Linux test. As a result Xubuntu was installed.
Xubuntu is a variation of Ubuntu, but aimed at lower performance machines. Perfect for my netbook! So far I have to say I love it. It runs fairly well, the program manager is great and it is user friendly.
I have looked online at openSuse, Mint and some of the other major distributions. They all look like they have made major improvements in the last 4 or 5 years. This makes me think that Linux might finally be ready for the mainstream. That could potentially be a big game changer. Windows is going to remain king for a long time. But if Linux could steal some market share from Apple, then the Linux community could attract some big name developers. Which in turn would attract more consumers.
Is Ljnux on the right path. Are they on to OS domination? Leave your comment!
