As someone who has designed and developed my fair share of websites, I have had the opportunity to work with most major web based CMS systems. This includes Joomla, WordPress, Drupal, and most recently was in charge of project inbound sales and marketing for Vengeo.
There is one thing that every company had in common. None of them really had everything I wanted in a full blown tool set. A lot of these web based CMS systems are also un-intuitive and clumsy. I have built a fair amount of websites, and none of them make working with them a no brainer.
The only CMS system that works relatively well and provides everything I need through decent third party tools is WordPress. I am not just saying that because they host this site.
But what happens if I want an intuitive CMS system that has all the major features I would want to control my online presence? The only company I know off who has done this is Vengeo. They’re original product can be seen at vengeo.com …. It is powerful, and the only real complaint is it was not as pretty looking as most consumers would like. But their redesign at vengeo.net is surprisingly desperately underwhelming and bug filled.
Joomla and Drupal are both OK products, but they don’t provide anywhere near the ease of use of WordPress nor do they have the 3rd party application support. They don’t provide an easy to use solution for those less technologically inclined.. These CMS’s also do not provide a lot of the flexibility designers need to create more custom sites. It doe not seem like much of a balance has been struck.
The fact that we have these systems is great, but what it needs is a Steve Jobs type. Someone with a real passion for technology, and making these systems an extension of the business. A CMS should be seemless, intuitive, and have sex appeal while allowing business owners to create a mesmerizing online presence.
Is anyone up to the task?
